Ethereum announced through its official channels a security incident on 16 December, that resulted in third party perpetrators obtaining a database stored in a backup server and exposing more than 16.000 users of the organisation’s forum.ethereum.org forum.
The exposed information is of a personal nature. The attackers had access to the affected users public and private messages, as well as their email and IP addresses or profile information. Given that the subject matter of the affected forum pertains to the field of cryptocurrencies, there is a high risk that the email accounts might be targeted in spear phishing campaigns with an end goal of trying to gain access to the exposed users’ cryptocurrency portfolios, thus making these credentials extremely attractive targets to cyber criminals.
